A New Name, A Familiar Promise: Service One Becomes Good Loop

On a warm Canberra afternoon, surrounded by community leaders, partners, members, and long-time supporters, a quiet but significant shift took place.

Service One Mutual officially became Good Loop.

At first glance, it is a rebrand. A new name. A new identity. But beneath that, it is something much deeper. It is a reflection of what has always been true and a clearer articulation of what comes next.

More Than a Bank

To understand Good Loop, you have to understand what makes a mutual different.

Unlike traditional financial institutions, Good Loop is owned by its members. It exists not just to generate profit, but to return value back into the community. That difference was felt strongly in the room, described as a living example of Canberra’s “interconnected web”.

This is an organisation that comes from community, serves community, and exists because of community.

That idea is not new. What is new is the language used to describe it.

“Good Loop” captures something people have already experienced for years. Money flows in. Support flows out. Communities grow stronger. And in turn, that strength creates more opportunity.

A loop. A good one.

A Legacy That Led Here

The story behind Good Loop stretches back more than six decades.

What began in 1959 as a small credit union in regional New South Wales evolved through mergers and growth into Service One Credit Union in 2001. For many Canberrans, Service One became a familiar and trusted name.

In 2015, the organisation joined the Bendigo Bank network, gaining access to stronger systems and services while maintaining its community focus. By 2023, it had transitioned fully into the community bank model.

But with that evolution came a question.

Did the name “Service One” still reflect who they were becoming?

The Board’s answer was clear. The organisation had outgrown its name.

Good Loop is not a departure from the past. It is a continuation of it, with sharper clarity and renewed purpose.

The Human Impact Behind the Name

What makes this rebrand meaningful is not the strategy behind it, but the impact it represents.

Each year, Good Loop contributes more than $400,000 back into communities across Canberra and surrounding regions. That funding supports everything from grassroots programs to essential services.

But the real story sits in the moments those contributions create.

A defibrillator installed in a suburban street that could save a life.

Through the StreetBeat partnership with St John Ambulance ACT and NSW, publicly accessible defibrillators are being rolled out with a bold vision: one in every suburb. In a country where survival rates for cardiac arrest can be as low as 5–10%, early access can increase survival dramatically.

A small loan that changes a life.

Through a partnership with Care Inc, individuals facing hardship can access interest-free loans. For some, this means escaping unsafe situations. For others, it means keeping the lights on.

A conversation that builds confidence.

Monthly financial seminars, available to members for a modest fee, are helping people navigate cost-of-living pressures with clarity and support.

And a network that multiplies impact.

As a proud partner of Hands Across Canberra, Good Loop contributes to a broader ecosystem supporting hundreds of charities across the region.

These are not abstract outcomes. They are deeply human ones.

What Good Loop Stands For

At the heart of the new brand is a set of values described as ETHOS:

Empathy. Trust. Harmony. Opportunity. Success.

They are simple words, but they carry weight. They speak to how decisions are made, how people are treated, and how impact is measured.

Because success, in a mutual, is not just financial.

It is measured in stronger communities, in opportunities created, and in the quiet confidence that someone has your back when it matters.

Looking Ahead

The rebrand is not the final step. It is the beginning of the next chapter.

Plans are already underway to expand community investment beyond the current $400,000 annually. A Specialist Disability Accommodation home is in development in Kambah, designed to support people with high physical needs.

Programs like StreetBeat will continue to grow. New initiatives, including expansions of community-driven projects like regional Monopoly editions, are on the horizon.

There is also a strong focus on leveraging technology and partnerships to deepen engagement and increase reach.

The ambition is clear.

As Good Loop grows, so too should its impact.

A Name That Feels Like the Future

Rebrands can sometimes feel cosmetic. This one does not. Good Loop feels like a name that was already being lived, now finally spoken out loud.

It captures a cycle of trust, contribution, and community that has been quietly operating for decades. And for the people in that room, and the many more beyond it, it represents something reassuring.

Not change for the sake of change.

But change that brings the purpose into clearer view.

A loop worth being part of.
